Lesson 41 The Verbs "TO SAY - TO TELL"

  1. El verbo “TO SAY” se usa al citar palabras textuales y cuando no hay objeto indirect.

Example:

Jesus Said: “Love one another”

The teacher says: “We will finish the course soon”

He said that he doesn’t want to see you again

  1. Cuando en la frase hay objeto indirecto, se usa el verbo to Tell.

Example:

I want you to tell me how to forget it

Digame como puedo olvidarlo!

He told me to wait for him to night

El me dijo que lo esperaba esta noche

She tells him that she loves him

Ella le dice que ella lo ama

  1. Es posible utilizar el verbo “TO SAY” cuando en la frase hay objeto indirecto; pero en este caso es absolutamente necesario colocar la preposición “TO” después de “SAY”

Example:

She said to me that she was married

Ella me dijo que ella estaba casada

Karen said to Michael that she didn’t want o go

Karen le dijo a Michael que ella no quería ir.

  1. Las siguientes expresiones idiomáticas deben construirse únicamente con el verbo “TO TELL”:

2. TO TELL LIES:

He was happy telling lies all the time

5. TO TELL THE TIME:

7. TO TELL:

  1. El copreterito en español es aquel tiempo que termina en ABA –ÍA; es decir nos indica un habito o costumbre que teníamos en el pasado. Para expresar este tiempo se usa la expresión “USED TO + FORMA S/V”

Example:

He used to cheat on her every weekend

El la engañaba cada fin de semana

We used to do some exercises at school

Nosotros haciamos ejercicios en la escuela

He didn’t use to drink any liquor

El no bebía ningún licor

Did she use to fight with him in the parking lot?

Nota: observes que la frase negativa e interrogativa, la palabra Used pierde la “D”

  1. Para la expresión “Estar acostumbrado a” se usa “BE USED TO”, seguida de un sustantivo o de un verbo en gerundio. SUJETO+BE USED TO+(SUSTANTIVO O VERBO EN GERUNDIO).

Example:

I’m used to the noise inside the classroom

Yo estoy acostumbrado al ruido dentro de la clase

She isn’t used to cold wáter

Ella no esta acostumbrada al agua fría

Were they used to seeing each other behind the house?

Ellos estaban acostumbrados a verse detrás de la casa

We are not used to studying for the test

No estamos acostumbrados a estudiar para el examen

Nota: Obsérvese que en ninguna de las frases la palabra Used no pierde la “D”

  1. Para la expresión “Aostumbrarse a” se usa “GET USED TO” seguida de un sustantivo o de un verbo en gerundio. SUJTO+ GET USED TO + (SUSTANTIVO O VERBO EN GERUNDIO).

Nota: El get no se hace negativo, ni se utiliza para construcción de preguntas, para ello se utiliza el Do, does, did, will, would, have=haber

Example:

I get used to them easily

Yo me acostumbro a ello fácilmente

He got used to traveling in the subway

El se acostumbró a viajar en el tren

She didn’t get used to working in groups

Ella no se acostumbro a nuestro genio

We will get used to working in groups

Nos acostumbraremos a trabajar en grupos

Did he get used to respecting the pedestrians?

El se acostumbró a respetar a los transeutes

Nota: Obsérvese que ninguna de las frases la palabra “USED” pierde la “D”

Lesson 39 "The Imperative Sentences"

  1. Una frase imperativa es la que indica una orden o mandato. Las frases imperativas son las únicas que no requieren de sujeto expreso, ya que el sujeto se sobre entiende como “YOU”.

Las frases imperativas se construyen con la forma simple del verbo.

Example:

Come here right now and kiss me

Take off that ugly cap and put on another one

  1. Una frase imperativa negativa se construye anteponiendo la expresión “DON’T” a la forma simple del verbo. Don’t + Verbo F/S

Example:

Don’t be careless Darling

Don’t count on me tonight

  1. Una frase imperativa cortes se forma agregando al principio o al final de la frase una de las siguientes expresiones, Please, will you?, would you?

Example:

Please, get out

Kiss me Will you?

Speak english, would you?

  1. Para construir una frase imperativa cortes negativa, se antepone la expresión “PLEASE DON’T” a la forma simple del verbo.

Please don’t call me any more

Please don’t stay here tonight

  1. Cuando la persona que da la orden se incluye en ella se antepone la expresión “LET’S” a la forma simple del verbo. Let’s + verbo F/S

Example:

Let’s study more often

Let’s have some coffe

Let’s go to the stadium tonight

  1. La frase negativa cuando la persona se incluye en la orden, se construye anteponiendo la expresión “LET’S NOT” a la forma simple del verbo Let’s+Not+ Verbo F/S

Example:

Let’s not waste our time

Let’s not keep her from winning

Let’s not find out the truth

  1. Los Adverbios de frecuencia mas communes son:

Nota: Usually y generally son sinónimos y tienen implicación positiva, often y frequently son sinónimos y tienen implicación positiva. Seldom y rarely son sinónimos y tienen implicaciones negativas.

  1. Los adverbios de frecuencia van antes del verbo si este es normal, después del verbo si este es modal y después de un auxiliar.

Examples:

She will always give up

He is generally sad

Do you often get up early? No, I seldom do it

  1. Algunos adverbios de frecuencia se colocan al final de la frase para enfatizarla y es exclamativa.

Example:

I Love you so much and I will love you always

Are you following me? No, why? Because I see you often!

  1. El adverbio “Ever” tiene tres significados diferentes, asi:
    1. Significa alguna vez en frases condicionales o en frases interrogativas.

Example:

If you ever fall in love, be careful

Do you ever remember me?

    1. Significa nunca en frases negativas o en frases interrogativas negativas, para lo cual requiere de la palabra “NOT”

Example:

I’m sorry but I don’t ever think of you

Hadn’t you ever been here before?

    1. Significa siempre en estas expresiones idiomaticas

Example:

He is ever ready for all

Her clothes ever fit on her body

I won’t wait for you forever

Nota: La palabra “Never” nunca se usa en frases interrogativas – negativas.
